Digital Photography

RiscOS has a good number of photographers and programmers interested in graphic file manipulation, so we are not short of facilities, however, as is often the case, the platform is a little short of hardware interfaces. Nevertheless there are ways round this!

Cameras

Early in the formation of the list I asked what cameras users had, and how they handled them. This is a rough summary on the findings. Where there is a link for the model, this is to a 'hints and tips' page for the camera concerned.

Clearly Olympus are the favourite choice, with PhotoDesk Ltd's software. That presumably is because PhotoDesk Ltd sell Olympus cameras, and so have written drivers to interface to them. However - Olympus are renowned for producing first class lenses, so their cameras are undoubtedly good.

Other Camera drivers

PhotoDesk Ltd have available drivers for some other cameras, as listed below. The top half is the official list, the bottom half is based on reports from list members.

Chris Hornby of PhotoDesk Ltd (who subscribes to the list) has indicated that he is prepared to cooperate with programmers wishing to write drivers for other cameras.

Other software

There are a lot of free programs which users may find useful with a digital camera. This is a list of just a few.

• !Photofiler
• !NumFile by Bernard Veasey is an intelligent renumbering program. Bernard runs a Sony digital camera and he wrote this for his own use.
• !PipeDream - or any other database or Spreadsheet program
• !Photodesk - an image manipulation program, especially designed for photographic work.
• !SwiftJPEG - a Freeware JPEG display program written by Andrew Hodgkinson. It is very simple to use, fast and you can quickly set it up so that a bunch of JPEGs, when dropped onto the iconbar, are displayed as a slideshow. It is freely available from most PD sources.
• !Thump. This is probably the ultimate thumbnail filing and display program. It displays the contents of the directory in real time thumbnails and has slideshow and databasing facilities. it is being actively developed and there is a mailing list, details available via the link.
